He recieved a masters degree in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1959 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Catholic University of America in 1964, followed by a post-doctoral appointment at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 1977 began directing the NRCC (National Resource for Computation in Chemistry) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; he joined the University of California, Berkeley faculty in 1981. Lester's research makes use of computational chemistry to understand the electronic structures of molecules using the Monte Carlo method.
